Notes on the History of Museums in Japan

The paper focuses on the development of the museum activities in Japan. The idea of collection, storage and display items representing monuments of natural history, material and spiritual culture, was drawn from the Western culture. Unlike the West, where the museums emerged as art collections. The reason of the fact can be found in the traditional world view. Japanese museums were formed as educational institutions bit later Japanese museums incorporated art functions also.
