Geopolitics or economy? The correlation of the goals of Anglo-Russian expansion in Central Asia in the nineteenth century

The article analyses the problem of the priorities in the expansion of the Russian and British Empires in the strategically important region of Central Asia. Geopolitical and economic goals of expansion of these empires are examined. The author concludes that geopolitics had relative priority whereas the economic factor has been underestimated in the historiography. These goals were intertwined. Geopolitics was frequently used as a lever to achieve economic goals and vice versa.
