Views on Iblis in Early Sufism: the problem of free will and predestination

Pavel Basharin

Vostok/Oriens '2017, №2

The paper examines the image of Satan (Iblis) in early Sufism. The motive of justification and condemnation of Satan is a characteristic element of ideological heritage of some Sufis. The analysis of genesis of this topic in early Sufism demonstrates certain connections with the doctrine of predestination in early Islam. Chronological frameworks are defined from the occurrence of the motive of the justification of Satan in Sufism to the thirteenth century. The first line estimates Satan as sufferer and sacrifice of God’s predestination. The climax of this tradition for early Sufism was the doctrine of al-Ḥallāj. The second line of this discourse connected with criticism against Satan’s role. The central figure in this process was Rūzbihān Baqlī.
