Olda Koltyga

Vostok/Oriens '2017, №2

The article focuses on the Philippine metrical romance. Metrical romance appeared in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial rule. In the form of awits and corridos, it spread among the northern ethnic groups such as Tagalogs, the Ilocano, and the Pangasinan. The connection to European stories of chivalry is a unique feature of the Philippine metrical romance. The popular medieval stories of Spanish, French and English origin were transplanted to the Philippine soil and became an integral part of the Philippine literature and culture through the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth centuries. The article examines terminological aspects and generic characteristics of the Philippine metrical romance.
