Gulnara Valiakhmetova

Vostok/Oriens '2017, №3

The article highlights the phenomenon of convergence of threats to international security. The author focuses on the threats to regional security in the Middle East and on the threats, which are formed as a result of active introducing breakthrough information and communication technologies into the military-political sphere. In the twenty first century the Middle East becomes the area of large scale information wars between the “old” and “new” centers of global and regional power as well as the cyber weapon testing facility. Iran’s, Turkey’s and Saudi Arabia’s quests for regional leadership involved inevitably these new regional “heavyweights” in global cyber arms race. The active participants in the cyber warfare are also non-state actors, especially Islamist terrorist groups. The cyber factor enhances the conflict capacity of the Middle East. It puts on the international agenda the question of increasing global cooperation in the cyber arm control process as well as the settlement of the region’s most pressing issues.
