Conflicts in the Near East: trends and actors

Vostok/Oriens '2017, №3

The conflicts in the Middle East have been acquiring new forms. In place of interstate conflicts of the “Cold war” era there came a generation of conflicts, emerging inside the states, mostly on religious, ethnic or tribal basis, accompanied by the wave of social protests. The “Arab Spring” also evoked traditional identities in a number of the states. Increasingly, the contemporary conflicts are not confined within the borders of individual states. The high-density involvement of regional and global nations cause significant impact of regional tensions upon the system of international relations which in its turn has been experiencing difficult and painful transition to a new international order.

Keywords: conflicts, players, identities, sectarian, tribal and ethnic controversies, regional and global powers, new alliances, problems of conflict settlement
