Sources of the history of Bengal and Bihar from the eighth to twelfth centuries

Vostok/Oriens '2017, №3

The primary sources for Bengal and Bihar in the eighth–twelfth centuries that were published mainly in India during the last 150 years are characterised in this paper. These sources may be divided into three large groups, namely a) material, b) epigraphic and numismatic, and c) narrative ones. The group of narrative sources may be in its turn divided into several subgroups whose historical value is unequal. These are Buddhist and Jain texts, so called smṛti texts, and a poem “Ramacharita” by Sandhyakaranandin. Each of these groups and subgroups are described separately on the basis of its historical value.

Keywords: dynasty, material objects, epigraphy, numismatics, narrative sources, colophons, Buddhism, Ramacharita, Sandhyakaranandin
