Libya from decolonisation to disintegration: on the oil waves of globalization

The article contains a survey of the historical background and consequences of political events in Libya during the so-called Arab Spring. The author analyzes main stages and features of the colonial and postcolonial history of Libya, the importance of local religious and political institutions, including that of the Sanusiya brotherhood that played a significant part both in the anti-Ottoman and the anti-Italian resistance, but also in the general political crisis and the fall of the Libyan Jamahiriya in 2011.
