The article examines the birth and further development of Russian-Mongolian relations in the first thirty years of the seventeenth century. The relations were developing simultaneously in two directions: embassy-exchanges and trade ties with Kalmyk tribal units and with the Kingdom of Altan-khan. Analysis of all main embassy negotiations and other materials indicates that both sides have not achieved the desired results but preserved loyal political and active trade relations and founded the grounds for their following development.
