In the article A.M. Petrov characterizes the main complexes of sources and historiographic data allowing to reconstruct a panorama of the economic contacts between the two macrocivilizations - those of the West and the East beginning from the epoch of the Great Geographic Discoveries and until the beginning of the XX century. Studying the phenomenon of the East's stable taking away the main part of the goods offered by the Western world and of the constant deficit of goods experienced by the West in its trade with the East up to the first decades of the XIX century the author wants to understand the internal logic of the existence of Eastern societies. In the most logical way it can be explained with the help of the conception of the Asian mode of production as a feature of a developing formation.
