Abstract

Origen, the great Christian theologian and exegete of the III century was a strong supporter of the allegoric method of interpreting the Bible and an opponent of literal interpreters. However, it is surprising that Origen who knew this method very well and was able to find symbols and allegories in the texts which by their nature were not allegoric at the same time was strikingly insensitive to figurative speech, metaphors, comparisons, which are very many in the Biblical books; quite often when interpreting such texts he tell into a very primitive literal explanations. Finding it difficult to explain this paradox modern researchers have been coming to the conclusion that Origen just did not understand many texts (because of cultural and linguistic barriers) or that he was absolutely devoid of a literary feeling and imagination, or that he did not know the laws of literary figurative speech. The author of the article suggests another more complimentary for Origen explanation of this phenomenon based on the analysis of Origen's own ideas about the nature and essence of the hermeneutic method used by him and about the tasks for the solution of which he serves.
