<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article is devoted to the description of Ayasofya Mosque by European artists who managed to get into it by means of cunning firmans or for a monetary bribe in the Ottoman era. They not only described the former Byzantine basilica, but also made sketches and even drawings, which they later published. After the completion of the major renovation of Ayasofya Mosque (1847–1849), carried out by architect Gaspard Fossati, an album of drawings of the Mosque was published (1852), which became the main source documenting the images of the exterior and interior of the mosque before and after major repairs. The publication of the album aroused great interest in Europe, spurring the desire of famous museums and collectors to acquire images of Ayasofya Mosque. As a result of the centuries-old Islamization of Ayasofya Mosque, its appearance has changed. The mosaic icons that were closing around the perimeter of the central nave were replaced by huge panels in Arabic with the first names in Islam: Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, the four righteous caliphs, as well as Hassan and Hussein. The original mistake in the arrangement of the shields with the names of Caliphs Osman and Ali lasted for more than two centuries since 1651, having survived the overhaul of Gaspard Fossati and the replacement of square panels with round medallions in the same erroneous order, until it was noticed by someone and quietly corrected. As a result, at auctions and even in European museums, images of the interior of the Sofia Mosque began to appear, issued for the beginning of the 19th century, while the corrected arrangement of the panels with the names Osman and Ali indicates that they were painted at a later date – just look at Fossati&amp;apos;s drawings. At the same time, to make such fakes more convincing, intricate &amp;quot;legends&amp;quot; were invented to justify the expediency of acquiring them.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Софийская мечеть</kwd><kwd>Фоссати</kwd><kwd>художники</kwd><kwd>панно</kwd><kwd>праведные халифы</kwd><kwd>музеи</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Ayasofya Mosque</kwd><kwd>Fossati</kwd><kwd>artists</kwd><kwd>murals</kwd><kwd>the righteous caliphs</kwd><kwd>museums</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front></article>
