<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The institution of co-rulership in the Seleuсid kingdom played a very important role in the most diverse spheres of the state’s life. First, it is regarded as an instrument of the legitimate transfer of power from the king to his heir. The second important function was the administrative one. The heir to the throne, being the ruler of the large part of the kingdom, essentially performed the functions of the supreme administrator of these territories. However, this side of the co-rulership is covered much less in comparison with the dynastic one. The main difficulty is in the absence of any evidence of the administrative activities of the Seleucid co-rulers in the classical narrative tradition. The only source are cuneiform tablets from Babylonia, dating mainly to the time of the first joint-kingship in the history of the state which is of Seleucus I and his son Antiochus I (294–281 BC).
A few Babylonian chronicles (BCHP 5–8) report on the activities of mār šarri (“the son of the king”) in the city of Babylon and its environs. The special value of these texts lies in the fact that the heirs to the throne (including Antiochus I) often were appointed as the rulers of the eastern satrapies of the kingdom. Seleucia on the Tigris – the capital of the Upper Satrapies of the Seleucid Empire – was their main residence. Thus, the main direction of their activity was to fall precisely on Babylonia. Due to the data of the chronicles we can learn about the role of the crown prince in many aspects of the region’s socio-economic life, regulation of land issues, active participation in the building and restoration of religious objects (for example, temple complexes of Esagila and Ezida), participation in religious rituals, contacts with local elites, etc. Available sources characterize mainly the situation over a relatively short period of time – the co-rulership of Antiochus I, but in general terms the results of our investigation can clarify the nature of power and the essence of the administrative functions of the joint-king as a whole. Thus, the institution of co-rulership should be considered, among other things, as an element of a complex system of provincial governance in the Seleucid state.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>эллинизм</kwd><kwd>Селевкиды</kwd><kwd>эллинистическая Вавилония</kwd><kwd>институт соправительства</kwd><kwd>Антиох I</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Hellenism</kwd><kwd>the Seleucids</kwd><kwd>Hellenistic Babylonia</kwd><kwd>co-rulership</kwd><kwd>Antiochus I</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front></article>
