История зарождения и возвышения африканского доколониального города-государства Иле-Ифе, известного своим уникальным культурным наследием, до сих пор остается загадкой для исследователей, несмотря на почти столетние попытки разгадать ее. В статье анализируется мифологическая версия происхождения Иле-Ифе, а также основные научные гипотезы о факторах, обусловивших его зарождение, и обстоятельствах, способствовавших его культурному развитию.
Abstract
The town of Ife (or Ile-Ife) situated on the territory of south-western Nigeria is one of the most ancient cultural centers of sub-Saharian Africa. Its cultural heritage (the unique sculptures from terracotta and copper alloys) has no analogy in the traditional plastic arts of Africa. The article concerns the problems of the origin of Ile-Ife and its culture. Mythological versions are considered; the hypothesis of Leo Frobenius about Ile-Ife as the successor of the legendary Atlantis; the hypothesis of archaeologist Th. Shaw about the decisive influence of an external factor (trans-Sahara commerce) on the development of Ife and its culture; the hypothesis od archaeologist Y. Sutton about the role of gold in the early history of Ile-Ife. On the basis of a complex of verbal and non-verbal sources arguments are given for or against these hypotheses.
