Abstract
The Victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War and its decisive contribution to the joint struggle of the Allied Forces in the Second World War helped defend and save the peoples not only of the USSR and Europe, but of many other countries including India. During the war, the leading political party of India - the Indian National Congress (INC) took a fi rm stand of opposition to fascism and Japanese militarism and tried to use the momentum to fi ght for the liberation of India from the British colonialism. Jawaharlal Nehru stressed that the Soviet Union and the United States both fought against fascism, though with different motivations. But, in Europe the USSR was the only force to stop fascism and Nazism. The INC expressed its solidarity with the Soviet people in its struggle. India, on its part, made quite a signifi cant contribution to the war efforts of the Allied Forces. Less than in two years after the war, India declared its Independence which radically changed the political situation not only in the East, but in the world as a whole.
