<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>In the first universal international organization, the League of Nations, there were only two countries from Tropical Africa: Liberia and Ethiopia. The League of Nations’ world was Eurocentric and mirrored the dreams and views of the dominant countries in the international community on colonialism, imperialism, independence and the ability to self-govern in 1920s and 1930s.At the end of the 1920s. Liberia attracted the attention of an international organization in connection with reports of the use of forced labor, prohibited by the League of Nations &amp;quot;Slavery Convention&amp;quot; of 1926. Permanent financial and economic difficulties in Liberia, repeated defaults, were exacerbated by the world crisis of 1929. In Geneva, they decided to apply all the new principles of multilateral diplomacy in regarding Liberia, and prove that LN has an effective policy towards African countries by applying the provisions developed for the LN mandate system. In interwar international relations in 1920-1930s there were two trends in the solution of the colonial question: rude annexation, taken from the arsenal of the imperialist policy of territorial division of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, which was carried out in the 1930s by Japan, Italy and Germany, and an attempt to expand the LN mandate system to new countries, called for in the case of Liberia by the governments of England, France and the United States. The materials collected by the LN commission confirmed the use of forced labor, as well as incidents of corruption and the involvement of high officials of the Liberian government in this system. The political crisis led to a change in government. And yet the League of Nations has failed to bring about major changes in Liberia. The Delegation of Liberia in the League used a delaying tactic. The Liberian conflict demonstrated that the degree of sovereignty of this African state should not be overestimated if the power was ruled by an oligarchic regime built on clientelism principles, unable to solve chronic economic problems and resolve periodic civil wars.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Либерия</kwd><kwd>Лига Наций</kwd><kwd>колонизация</kwd><kwd>империализм</kwd><kwd>суверенитет</kwd><kwd>принудительный труд</kwd><kwd>мандатная система</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Liberia</kwd><kwd>League of Nations</kwd><kwd>colonization</kwd><kwd>imperialism</kwd><kwd>sovereignty</kwd><kwd>forced labor</kwd><kwd>mandate system</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front></article>
