Scholars know rather little about palaces in the Ancient Egypt. This is caused by the fact that the most part of the data we currently have come from the New Kingdom palaces (1570–1070 B.C.), namely ones of the 18<sup>th</sup>, 19<sup>th</sup> and 20<sup>th</sup> dynasties. As for the palaces that functioned at times of the Egyptian state formation, when its first capital Memphis was founded, we are barely aware of them (3150–2686 B.C.). Having analyzed the archaeological data from Hierakonpolis, the author concludes that in the Early Dynastic Egypt a palace, the locus of a king’s power, was considered the link between the earth and the otherworld where deities and ancestors live. Thus, a palace confirmed a king’s legitimacy – he was believed to rule at will and on behalf of the ancestors. This is the reason why these buildings were usually located in necropolis areas.
