Abstract
The relations between Mongolia and China have a many-century history, and in the Middle Nges they often made a decisive impact on the course of events in China. So it was, for example, in the post-Yuan period known in the history of Mongolia as the period of the "hegemony of oyrats (Western Mongols)", when in the first half of the XV century the united Mongol-Oyrat state was ruled by prominent Oyrat statesmen Togon-tayshi (died 1439) and his son Esen (1407-1455). Holding the influential office of the first minister - tayshi at the court of the supreme khan of Mongolia they fully managed all the affairs of the state having turned "all-Mongol khan" into a simple puppet on the throne. Their centralizing policy directed to overcome the scattering state of the country had brought to the Oyrat-Chinese war in 1449. The defeating by the oyrats of a huge Chinese army on September the 1-st in the locality of Tumu (SouthWest of the town of Khuaylay in the modern province of Khebey) and the capture of Min emperor Chju Tsi-chien have not remained unnoticed in Chinese historiography. This event has been called in it "The Tumus catastrophe". This article deals with the circumstances of the conclusion of a peace treaty in the autumn of 1450 between Oyrat ruler Esen and Chinese side. The lessons of the defeat had made the Min authorities concentrate all their military power in the North-West and relinquish foreign expansion in other directions. The researchers have more than once remarked that "China had turned her face to the North-West with her back to the sea".
