SUFIZM I SUFII V NIZhNEM POVOLZh`E

Abstract

Basing on a wide range of ethnographic and historical materials including local Muslim chronicles, oral histories and the author's field data the paper discusses the role of Sufism and its actors in the spread of Islam in the Lower Volga-Region. The focus is made on activities of Sufi sheikhs and brotherhoods of Yasaviyya, Kubraviyya and Naqshbandiyya-Khalidiyya from the middle ages through modern times. The author argues that Sufism was the main form of practicing Islam among different nomadic and settled peoples of the area. It was and still is closely related to a network of holy places (known in this region under the Turkicized Arabic name of aulya). The author describes history of holy places, their functions and peculiarities of worship. The paper contains important information on shamanic rites and practices (baksylyk) and demonological beliefs still popular among inhabitants of the Lower Volga. Given its ancient transit character on the ways of international trade, migration and pilgrimage the town of Astrakhan have been playing the role of the chief Sufi centre in the area. Through Sufi sheikhs and migrants coming from Central Asia, Caucasus and the Volga-Ural region it was linked to a number of traditional Islamic centers in Russia and abroad. Nowadays Sufism in Astrakhan is practiced mostly by North Caucasus migrants of Dagestani and Chechen origin (Avars, Darghins, Lezghins, Chechens, Ingushes etc.), among which there are representatives of different acting branches of Naqshbandiyya, Shadhiliyya and Qadiriyya brotherhoods reappeared in Russia's post-Soviet Caucasus.
