<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The paper reviews the language policy of British colonizers in Sudan in the first half of the 20th century. Its implementation was caused by an extremely complex and complicated ethnolinguistic situation in the country, where more than 60 indigenous languages were used on the vast territory along with the Arabic language (both in the literary form and in form of Sudanese Arabic) and the newly formed Juba Arabic pidgin representing a simplified mixture of Egyptian and Sudanese Arabic. Later Juba Arabic evolved into a separate lingua franca in South Sudan. Besides, colonizers themselves strove to impose English on the local population of South Sudan, seeking to divide Sudan into two parts and prevent the development of Islam and Arabic in the South of the country. Thus, by the beginning of the 20th century the ethnolinguistic situation in Sudan was heterogeneous and unstable, which required the adoption of urgent measures for language regulation. The formation of the uniform language policy was laid upon the British colonial administration, which controlled Sudan from 1899 to 1956.The colonial Southern Policy was designed for forming two independent socio-political identities: northern Arabic-Muslim and southern English-Christian. The implementation of this policy stipulated, among other things, the creation of highly regulated and codified sociolinguistic conditions in South Sudan under which Arabic and Islam had no right to exist and English took priority. In particular, this policy in the South restricted the use of Arabic in schools and introduced Sunday as an official holiday (in accordance with Christian tradition). Besides, dress codes and naming practices were regimented, which led to the abandoning of Arabic names and clothes in South Sudan. This paper also clarifies the peculiarities of operation of missionary societies in Sudan, whose activities preceded the introduction of the Southern Policy, analyzes its main stages, describes the results of the Rejaf Language Conference of 1928 that was the first to work out a unified scientific approach to the settlement of the complex linguistic situation in Sudan.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Судан</kwd><kwd>Северный Судан</kwd><kwd>Южный Судан</kwd><kwd>арабский язык</kwd><kwd>джубайский арабский</kwd><kwd>английский язык</kwd><kwd>языковая политика</kwd><kwd>языковая ситуация</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Sudan</kwd><kwd>North Sudan</kwd><kwd>South Sudan</kwd><kwd>Arabic language</kwd><kwd>Juba Arabic</kwd><kwd>English language</kwd><kwd>language policy</kwd><kwd>linguistic situation</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front></article>
