Sun Yat-sen’s “Three Principles of the People” as an Idea Source of Mao Zedong's “New Democracy” Theory

Dmitriy Smirnov

Vostok/Oriens '2013, №3

Mao Zedong connected a “new democracy” state construction with “The Three principles of the People” (sanminzhuyi) by Sun Yat-Sen directly. To a certain extent these principles (nationalism, the People’s power, and the People’s welfare) were reflected in the contents of a “new democracy” theory and practice. Both theories aimed at “preventing” capitalism in China. “New democracy” as a particular, third, revolutionary and modernization way was considered by Mao Zedong as the only possible one for China and for all colonial and dependent states.
