Hakob Harutуunyan

Vostok/Oriens '2013, №3

The ancient Armenian map “Ashkharatsouits” is characterized by western orientation which means that the enumeration of administrative and territorial units (or provinces) was from west to east. This analysis shows that the main author of the map was Movses Khorenatsi (5th century CE), but it was finally edited in the 7th century by well-known Armenian scientist Anania Shirakatsi.

Keywords: historical geography and cartography, “Ashkharatsouits”, western orientation, enumeration of administrative and territorial units, Movses Khorenatsi, Anania Shirakatsi
