Ibrahim as-Samarra’i – Outstanding Arabic Philologist of the 20th Century

The paper highlights the life and creative output of Iraqi linguist Ibrahim as-Samarra’i who belongs to a prominent group of outstanding Arabic scientists and has more than 500 works in different fields. His academic pursuits were wide and diverse and touched upon the most important issues of Arabic philology in the second half of the 20th century, while some conclusions, which he made resulting from his research, were genuinely revolutionary. Ibrahim as-Samarra’i proved himself not only as a linguist, but also as a serious writer, talented poet and bright critic, and his achievements in each of these areas cannot be exaggerated. Nevertheless, his talent and accomplishments remain unrecognized to the full extent both in his native Iraq and abroad. This article sheds new light on his major scientific achievements.
