Islamization of Society and Diffusion of Power in Pakistan

Vostok/Oriens '2013, №5

The process of Islamization in Pakistan which had begun in earnest since the late 1970s, and its correlation with the growing diffusion of authority and power in the country is the chief subject of the article. The introduction of the Islamic laws, norms and practices has resulted in the increase of antagonism between different Islamic sects and schools and the estrangement of minorities, non-Muslim and Muslim (Shia’), and to the growth of mass violence, chaos and terror. The brutalization of struggle for power and influence is directly linked to the repressive and authoritarian rule by the military that has exerted a profound impact on the home and foreign policy of the country. Furthermore, Pakistan is not unique as similar trends are characteristic for many other Muslim majority states.

Keywords: policy of Islamization, split among Muslims, Pakistan, non-state centres of power and influence, diffusion, slackening of state power
