Patrimonialism vs Sultanism: the Arab Spring and the Fate of Traditional Supremacy

The article discusses possible impact of the events of the Arab Spring on the political regimes in the Middle East. The author examines this problem in the context of the general crisis of the authoritarian modernization model. The destinies of patrimonial and sultanic regimes in the Middle East based on traditional policy instruments and related to aims of modernization, permit predictions on prospects of authoritarian regimes and on various forms of traditional domination in the countries of the region.
