The Russian Oriental Music Studies: Formation and Prospects

The article briefly presents the history of the formation of a new trend of Russian science – Music Orientology (Oriental music Studies) which emerged in the Soviet period and acquires new traits in modern Russia. Special attention is given to schools of Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, the Far East (Vladivostok), and the specifics of their scientific approach to the study of musical cultures of the East. Among the prospects the author picks out, for consolidation with the scientists in other areas of Orientology.
