Arabic Language in Somalia: Past and Present

Vostok/Oriens '2014, №3

The paper examines the peculiarities of Arabic language in Somalia, which has been a language of trade, education and religion throughout the whole history of this country. It became an important means of communication in Somalia already in the 13th century and deeply penetrated many areas of life, maintaining its influence in the north and south of the country during medieval times and the colonial period. Moreover, the Arabic alphabet was long considered one of the priority options for the script of the Somali language. Today Arabic plays second fiddle to Somali as the second official language of Somalia and is mainly used in the religious sphere. However, a widespread Arabic-based education system along with long-standing Muslim traditions makes it possible to presume that the interest in Arabic language in the country will only intensify.
