German Breakthrough into Afghanistan: An Episode of Military-Diplomatic Confrontation during the First World War

The article discusses a little-known episode in the history of military-political confrontation between the great powers in the Middle East during World War I. A military-diplomatic mission of the Central Powers headed by Oskar Ritter von Niedermayer and Werner Otto von Hentig carried out a breakthrough into Afghan territory. The author shows how German and Turkic agents managed to reach Afghanistan and why the Entente allies failed to prevent them.
