Japanese Culture Influence on Ch. Rennie Mackintosh

Valentina Hairova

Vostok/Oriens '2014, №4

One of the most important factors of Mackintosh’s artistic manner formation was his ardor for Japanese arts. He expressed his admiration to it in his graphics, designs, and architectural masterpieces. All his works have incredible style including unity of shape, color, seeming simplicity in embodiment of his ideas, which all were the results of his acquaintance with Japanese artists and architects’ creative works. Ukiyo-e cannons, principals of usage of rhythm in interior design, entirety of the whole design, structure of the wooden constructions which is open to spectators, compositional solution of the space – all that, after creative processing, led the Scottish master to success in the beginning of the twentieth century and took Mackintosh’s creation out of the national scope to the world level phenomena.
