Transformation of the Soviet-Iranian Relations since the Islamic Revolution

This article is dedicated to the problem of the transformation of the Soviet-Iranian relations after the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran and discusses the most important aspects of these relations. Comprehensively analyzing the transformation of the relations, the author concludes that the Soviet Union took advantage of Iran’s desire to obtain the status of a regional leader, whereas Iran was interested in developing cooperation with the USSR in order to create a counterweight to the USA presence in the strategically important Gulf region.
