Shanghai Women in the First Half of the Twentieth Century: From the “Triple Obedience” to Equality in Marriage

The article examines the new phenomenon in the lives of middle-class Chinese women from Shanghai that manifested in the dramatic change in marital status of women during the period of the Chinese Republic. The research concentrates on such questions as improving of the status of daughters, women’s right to divorce, the appearance of a large number of urban women without family, transformation of the institution of concubines. It is shown that in comparison with the previous centuries due to significant lifestyle changes urban women obtained new opportunities for self-development but at the same time faced with many economic and psychological challenges.
