Singapore in Malaysia: Hopes and Disappointments (1963–1965)

The two years when Singapore was a part of the Federation of Malaysia were the final steps towards to its independence. It was quite a difficult time. External threat from Indonesia rallied states in the Federation but could not keep them together, and the internal disagreements between the central government in Kuala Lumpur and the government of Singapore eventually led to the exit Singapore from the Federation.
