British Economic Interests in Palestine in the Late Nineteenth – Early Twentieth Centuries

Mikhail Shapovalov

Vostok/Oriens '2014, №6

The article deals with the economic aspects of British policy in Palestine in the late nineteenth − early twentieth century. The question of the existence of British economic interests in Palestine before 1917 is how much the British ruling circles and business community were interested in pursuing a policy in the Holy Land, and how this was connected with purely political and geostrategic considerations. The paper analyzes in detail the British participation in railway construction in the Holy Land as well as in the modernization of the Palestinian ports. Special attention is given to the study of economic and commercial interests of Britain.

Keywords: Palestine, Palestinian economy. British policy in Palestine
