Sergey G. Eliseev’s Report about Formosa Prepared for the St.-Petersburg Oriental Studies Society (1915)

The paper publishes the report of the famous Russian orientalist Sergey G. Eliseev about Formosa and offers some results of preliminary analysis of the manuscript never published before. Sergey G. Eliseev visited Formosa in winter 1912–1913 during his studying in the Tokyo University and stayed on the island for several weeks. The report is a valuable source of information about Taiwan under the Japanese occupation, including Taiwan’s sugar and camphor industry, education, Japanese administration and ethnic policy. The report based on notes that Eliseev had made during his visit to Formosa was supplemented with latest information about the Tapani uprising happened in Formosa in July–August 1915.
