Ethno-Class in the Seleucid Empire: Myth or Reality?

Vostok/Oriens '2015, №5

The article discusses whether the notion of dominant ethno-class developed by Charles Edson and Pierre Briant is relevant for the study of the Seleucid society. The facts that the contemporaries regarded the Seleucid state as the Syrian kingdom, and that the ruling dynasty lacked tendency to position itself as the Macedonian prove that during the Seleucid period social classes were multiethnic. Therefore the Greco-Macedonians may not be considered the dominant class in the society.
