Evangelicals, Israel and the U.S. Policy in the Middle East

Victoria Fradkova

Vostok/Oriens '2015, №5

The article analyses the current tendencies within the American political system, special emphasis being made on the correlations between specific domestic factors and the developments in certain foreign policy initiatives. The primary purpose is to provide a detailed account of the influence that some religious groups, especially Evangelical Christians, exert on the American foreign policy decision-making process. The thesis is supported by a plethora of recent studies which cast a serious doubt on the idea that American foreign policy in general and in the Middle East region in particular has been efficient and reflective in terms of American national interests. The work provides insights into the evolution of Evangelical religious thought through the impact of dispensationalism. The resulting transformation of this religious denomination has led to the formation of the solid political alliance between the state of Israel and Evangelical Christians which has gained significant political benefits and has been regarded as a potent lobbying pro-Israeli group.
