Vitaly Prudnikov , Vladimir Tishin

Vostok/Oriens '2016, №1

The paper deals with the term agulani which occurs in the chronicle of the First Crusade “Gesta Francorum et aliorum Hierosolimitanorum”. The authors consider different forms of the word in the text and analyze its interpretations in historiography. They argue that the term agulani should be considered as the reproduction of the Turkic word oğlan which was used in Turkic languages during the eleventh century as synonymous with the Arabic word ghulām and which occurs in the authentic Arabic and Persian sources denoting the royal escort of Muslim rulers.
