Vostok/Oriens '2017, №3

For a long time social responsibilities of Korea women were normally restricted to the household and reproduction. Subordinate position of women in the traditional Korean society was promoted and reinforced by dominant neo-Confucian doctrine, according to which gender inequality was important to maintain the universal harmony. The liberation of Korea, establishment of a democratic state on the south of the Korean Peninsula and intensive development of the economy contributed to the empowerment of women, but did not solve in general the problem of gender inequality. This study aims to determine the main stages and factors of the evolution of social status of women in the Republic of Korea. The authors analyze the problem of gradual emancipation of Korean women in the context of socio-cultural and political development of Korean society
