Foreign economic relations of the Russian and Ottoman Empires in the middle nineteenth century and Russian society

The article explores the significance of the Russian-Turkish foreign economic relations for the Russian society after the Crimean War. Despite the steady growth of Russian-Turkish trade turnover in the second half of the nineteenth century, trade contacts of Russia with the Ottoman Empire did not arouse interest on the part of representatives of Russian social thought. This was partially due to the insignificance of the volume of Turkish foreign trade in comparison to Russia's. A more relevant topic for the Russian press and journalists was the development of the economic potential of the South of Russia, local Black Sea trade, and contacts with leading European powers.
