The Participation of Bashkir in the Construction of Forts and Military Actions on the Territory of Western Siberia in the Late Sixteenth–Seventeenth Centuries

The paper discusses and analyzes the hostilities and other historical events relating to the period of the Russian conquest of western Siberia, where the Bashkir and military units formed of Service class Tatars involved by initiative of the Russian authorities. Particular attention is given to the participation of the Bashkir, who built fortresses (ostrogs), patrolled a border of Russia and participated in hostilities in the southern Urals and Siberia. Individual groups of the Bashkir fought among the adherents of The Khanate of Siberia recovery, supported by the rulers of the western Mongols, i.e. the Oirat.
