Medieval Turkish Ashik Poetry: Practice of Composing and Performance

Svetlana Vorobyova

Vostok/Oriens '2014, №1

The article analyses practice of composing and performance of songs in the medieval Turkish ashik poetry – of ashik-singers whose tradition was finally formed in the 17th century. This art combines elements of folklore and literature. The author emphasizes such substantial features of the ashik poetry as variability and improvisation, on the one hand, and authorship, on the other. Their synthesis specifies the ashik art as oral individual-author creation.

Keywords: ashik, ashik poetry, folklore, individual artist
