Tran Van Giau, A Historian and a Revolutionary (1911 – 2010)

The article is dedicated to the life, work and activities of Tran Van Giau, a most prominent historian of contemporary Vietnam. Tran Van Giau created significant works such as the first Vietnamese textbooks in historical and dialectical materialism, in modern and current history of Vietnam, history of working class, liberation war in the Southern Vietnam, history of Vietnamese nation’s ideology. Owing to these works and lecturing of Tran Van Giau the contemporary generation of social scientists of Vietnam was formed. Being a member of the communist party of Vietnam, Tran Van Giaumostly devoted the first thirty years of his life to the struggle for the liberation of Vietnamese people from the national and social oppression. During the August revolution of 1945 he headed the local government in Saigon, the biggest city in Vietnam.
