History of Confl ict over Water Resources in Central Asia in the Post-Soviet Era

The Central Asian region is characterized by limited water resources. That gives rise to various conflicts which are based on a dispute over water. Often the cause of contemporary conflicts over water is seen in the economic system embodied in the Soviet era. Such approach seems simplistic. In this paper I propose a broader view of the causes of contemporary water disputes and examine the history of their development.
