Old Beijing as Described by the Chiefs of the Russian Orthodox Mission

Since the eighteenth century the Russian Orthodox Church had a constant mission in Beijing. Besides diplomatic functions missionaries were engaged in studying of culture of Qing China. Practically all available reports of the chiefs of the Beijing Russian Orthodox Mission contain the information on material culture of the Chinese. The paper publishes their descriptions of Beijing everyday life, especially trade and crafts, from authentic Russian archives.
